# How I use Obsidian Publish to Share Notes and Research Results
> [!abstract] Summary
> A brief description of my reasoning for sharing notes and research results on my website. I describe how I use Obsidian Publish to easily add and share content.
Since I started hosting my website on [Obsidian Publish](https://obsidian.md/publish), I have been experimenting with ways to make the most out of the platform's capacity to share endless, linked pages. I demonstrated the utility of having different pages by explaining [[how I built this website]], right here on my website. So far, I have used my website to share my most up-to-date [[CV]], explain [[who I am as an artist]], provide [[career resources]] to students and scientists, and help folks [[learn about soil]]. All of these pages are the result of better integration between my workflow and my website, which reduces the friction between writing, sharing, and updating my online presence.
Sharing the results of research efforts is a key part of the scientific process. This kind of sharing is an ideal candidate for my website workflow. Much of my research is applied, in the sense that it relates directly to the management and conservation of soils. As I have been building up our capacity to do applied research with students at the [[Coastal Soil Horizons & Ecology Lab (C-SHEL)]] over the last several years, I've realized that we need an approach to easily and quickly share results with folks who are interested in the work. This kind of results dissemination is also an important part of fulfilling the expectations for funders of our research.
I recently tried sharing my work in different ways on my website, powered by [Obsidian Publish](https://obsidian.md/publish). Both seemed to work well!
## Sharing speaker notes at the end of a presentation
I recently shared my speaker notes at the end of a public talk that I gave. I outlined and drafted the talk in [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/) prior to putting together my slides. In doing so, I summarized the main points from each slide and included links to references and additional materials that might be of interest to the audience. I published these notes on my website and shared a QR code with a link to the page on the last slide. I was pleased when many folks in the audience pulled out their phones to grab the link.
Beyond being a useful resource for the audience (I hope), the process of developing speaker notes with the intention of sharing them helped me in two ways:
1. Outlining my talking points more formally helped me prepare for the presentation.
2. The information I synthesized during the talk is now stored in my Obsidian vault, and is therefore easier to access when preparing teaching materials[^teaching] or other written content.

## Sharing preliminary research updates during a workshop
I helped facilitate a practitioner workshop recently and had the opportunity to disseminate preliminary findings from an ongoing research project. Rather than creating a one-page handout, I decided to use the flexible format of my website to create a page that I could continue to update with research results as the project progresses. I created the page with a few key features:
- call out boxes to summarize ideas and highlight key results
- embed student research posters directly on the page
- link to other resources on my website
I created a small handout (about the size of a business card) with a title, my contact information, and a QR code with the link to the research results page. I handed these out during the workshop and encouraged folks to visit the page to learn more. I was able to fit a lot more information on the website than on a paper handout, that might end up getting lost or thrown away anyway. If someone asks me about the project later, I can easily share the link.

# Benefits of sharing notes and research updates with [Obsidian Publish](https://obsidian.md/publish)
Here are a few reasons why I will keep doing this moving forward:
- These shared pages are integrated into my [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/) workflow so they are easy to make and become part of my knowledge base and can be expanded upon in other contexts (like preparing course materials[^teaching]).
- The pages are easy to create and link together. It's perfect for sharing text-based content.
- The simple (and aesthetically pleasing) [markdown formatting](https://help.obsidian.md/Editing+and+formatting/Basic+formatting+syntax) makes it easy to highlight key results (using callout boxes) and embed deliverables (like research posters).
- I have full control over the content allowing for updates and changes as needed.
