I am a scientist, writer, educator, and speaker with a deep fascination for soils, the organisms that inhabit them, and the community of people who study them.

My research lies at the intersection of soil biology, disturbance ecology, and biogeochemistry where I explore the role of soil fauna in important ecosystem processes like carbon and nitrogen cycling and soil organic matter formation and stabilization. My current research focuses on how wild and prescribed fires affect soil food webs, organic matter, and carbon cycling. Outside my research, I teach soil microbiology, coach the soil judging team, and seek ways to strengthen our connection to soils through art, photography, writing, and design.
